AP English Language and Composition

Pre-Requisite Reading Assignment

Prior to entering class, students will read Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and complete the chart analyzing examples of King’s persuasive techniques. These resources will be provided at orientation and can be accessed below: 

Materials

Students will need the following:

  1. Loose-leaf paper (Lots of it!)
  2. Pencils or pens
  3. A highlighter
  4. A binder (any size)
  5. Three dividers (Notes; Vocabulary; Grammar)
  6. Class novels (please see below)

Class Novels

Listed below are the novels we’ll be reading this year. They are not provided by the school, so students will need to plan ahead to check out a copy from the local library.  However, given the nature of the class, each student is encouraged to purchase her/his own copy (used or new) of the books. This will provide students the opportunity to practice highlighting and annotating texts, important skills to develop for college level courses.  

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (1st 9 weeks)

The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore (2nd 9 weeks)

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (3rd 9 weeks)

A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah (4th 9 weeks)

Course Overview 

 

Course Objectives:

 

“An AP English Language and Composition course requires students to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts and skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their reading and their writing should make students aware of interactions among a writer’s purposes, reader expectations, and an author’s propositional content, as well as the genre conventions and the resources of language that contribute to effectiveness in writing.” (The College Board, AP English Course Description, Fall 2014, p. 2)

The course is organized around four essential questions—one for each of our thematic units. The course will have its framework in American literature; however, writers from other cultures will also be included as needed and as appropriate. In this class, the development of close reading and writing skills guide the sequencing and choice of materials. Through these students will examine rhetoric, analyze purpose and audience, evaluate claims and critique and synthesize a variety of texts.

Throughout the course, students will strive to answer, debate, and explore the following essential questions:

•   How does language affect meaning?

•   How do authors use rhetorical devices to create and enhance meaning?

 

Goals:(from the College Board English Language and Composition Course Description)

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze and interpret samples of purposeful writing, identifying and explaining an author’s use of rhetorical strategies;

  • Analyze images and other multimodal texts for rhetorical features;

  • Use effective rhetorical strategies and techniques when composing;

  • Write for a variety of purposes;

  • Respond to different writing tasks according to their unique rhetorical and compositional demands, and translate that rhetorical assessment into a plan for writing;

  • Create and sustain original arguments based on information synthesized from readings, research, and/or personal observation and experience;

  • Evaluate and incorporate sources into researched arguments;

  • Demonstrate understanding of the conventions of citing primary and secondary sources;

  • Gain control over various reading and writing processes, with careful attention to inquiry (research), rhetorical analysis and synthesis of sources, drafting, revising/rereading, editing, and review;

  • Converse and write reflectively about personal processes of composition;

  • Demonstrate understanding and control of Standard Written English as well as stylistic maturity in their own writing;

  • Revise a work to make it suitable for a different audience
