The editors invite submissions of original, previously unpublished manuscripts that engage issues related to aspects of Black men's experiences or topics such as gender, masculinities, and race/ethnicity. Specifically, the journal welcomes manuscripts that examine the social, political, economic, and historical factors that influence the life chances and experiences of men of Black descent; authors should address such concerns using disciplinary or interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives and approach those topics using empirical methods, theoretical analysis, or literary criticism.

Manuscripts must not exceed 35 pages, including references and tables. Articles that have been published elsewhere in any form, version, or language cannot be considered for publication in Spectrum. Be advised that articles available on the World Wide Web constitute previously published articles. Electronic manuscripts (and accompanying cover letter) should be composed in Microsoft Word, formatted according to Spectrum guidelines, and sent to spectrum@osu.edu.

Authors of articles that have been accepted for publication will be asked to submit the final version of their paper in Microsoft Word. Authors must sign a consent-to-publish form, which is an agreement vesting copyright in Indiana University Press.

Spectrum follows publication guidelines according to American Psychological Association, 5th edition. Articles that do not conform to APA Guidelines will be returned to the author before being released for external review.

Submission Guidelines

  1. All articles must be formatted for 8.5" x 11" paper.
  2. Double-space the entire manuscript, including the title, body text, all quotations, notes, and the reference list. Use Times New Roman, 12-point font with the same type face and size used throughout. Note that underlines become italics.
  3. Use only one space after all punctuation.
  4. The title page should include: (a) names of all authors; (b) manuscript title with running head; (c) institutional affiliation and addresses of all authors; (d) email address, telephone number, and fax number of the corresponding or lead author.
  5. Do not center or fully justify your text—all text should be left-justified. Paragraph indentations should be tabbed at five spaces.
  6. Prepare in separate files and print on separate sheets all endnotes (if used) and the reference list. Note numbers should be prepared in superscript and normally occur at the end of a sentence, not following an author's name. Do not use word processor features that embed notes as footnotes or endnotes. All diagrams and graphic materials are the responsibility of the author and must be submitted in camera-ready copy as well as in electronic files. It will be the responsibility of the author to follow guidelines for fair-use printed materials and to secure permission to reprint copyrighted texts or images.
  7. Use American spellings and punctuation except when quoting from a source that has used British style. All punctuation except colons and semicolons is placed inside quotation marks. Single quotes are used only for quotes within quotes; otherwise, double quotation marks are to be used.
  8. Provide translations (your own--or the standard, if there is a printed translation available) of all material in languages other than English. The translations should be incorporated into the text, following the foreign term or foreign selection.
  9. In order to facilitate blind review, do not print your name or affiliation on the article itself, but provide a separate document with that information.
  10. Please pay particular attention to the following matters of punctuation:
    • Apostrophes: All singular proper nouns, including the names of persons and places, form their possessives in the same manner (Mars's wrath, Camus's novel, Kansas's weather, Dickens's reputation; but the Dickenses' economic woes).
    • Colons: Skip one space only, not two. In separating a title and subtitle of a book, use a colon.
    • Periods: Skip one space only (not two) after all periods, semicolons, and commas.
    • Commas: Always use a comma before all coordinating conjunctions in a series of three or more items and always after "i.e.” and "e.g.”
    • Hyphens: Do not use spaces before or after hyphens.
    • Em-dashes: Prepare on disk as two hyphens with no space before or after hyphens ("natural--instead of chosen--alliances”). Typesetters will convert the hyphens to em-dashes ("natural—instead of chosen—alliances”).
  11. When quoting from or referring to a text, do not, as a rule, use endnotes, but follow the APA Guidelines for in-text, parenthetical documentation. A complete range of pages must be provided for all articles or book chapters listed in the works cited. All works cited in the body of the essay and in endnotes must appear, with full bibliographic details, in the reference list. Endnotes should only be used to provide explanatory materials that would be cumbersome in the text itself. See APA Guidelines section 4.1.
  12. Prepare a 150-word abstract in a separate file.
  13. Book Review Guidelines

Spectrum: A Journal on Black Men seeks to keep its readers apprised of new books related to the journal's main focus and professional practice in related fields. To that end, reviews of books are considered for publication. Invitations to review, selection of reviewers, and decisions to publish a reviewer's manuscript are made solely at the discretion of the Book Review Editor, in consultation with the General Editors. Most reviews in Spectrum are summary reviews-reviews designed to inform readers about works of interest to those concerned about men of Black descent. Summary reviews should not exceed 1,500 words; they should briefly and objectively describe the contents of the book as well as the author's/editor's stated objectives. The review should include at a minimum: (a) evaluations of how well the author/editor achieved his or her stated purpose(s); (b) references to other works that have treated similar subject matter; (c) explanations about how this work differs from previous works; and (d) judgments about the relative quality or contribution of the work to the field(s). Submissions and questions should be sent to spectrum@osu.edu.
